For most families in Basildon, Pitsea, Laindon and the SS postcodes, that short drive is the only catch. There is free parking on site, which on a busy Saturday morning is worth more than it sounds.
The classes we run
There are two dedicated beginner street dance classes each week, split by age so nobody is stuck in a room moving too fast or too slow:
- Saturday, 9 to 10am, ages 5 to 10, beginners
- Monday, 6.30 to 7.30pm, ages 10 to 16, beginners
Behind those, the full street dance programme runs through the week: hip hop as the spine, with locking, waacking, house and old school taught as foundation styles the way the originators did them. This is the part that separates HK from a church-hall class with a playlist. Street dance at HK is taught by working, competing dancers. Our coaching credits include a World Hip Hop Championship final, a Britain's Got Talent semi-final, and a UDO British Street champion who has danced for names your child will recognise. Twenty-three years of it, in one studio.
That matters because street dance is a craft with a history, not a set of moves. Children who train here learn to freestyle, to hold their own in a circle, and to move in any of the foundation styles rather than copying one routine. It is good exercise, and an hour of dance like this counts toward the NHS activity guidelines for children, but the point is the dancing, not the calories.
No experience needed
This is the thing that stops most families walking in, so I want to deal with it head on. Your child does not need any experience. Most of the room on a first Saturday is exactly the same, curious and a little shy, and the class is taught with first-timers in mind.
Bring trainers and comfortable clothes, leave the nerves at the door. There is no school-show pressure and no judgement, just an hour where a child gets to move, make friends, and find that they can do more than they thought. Come every week or drop in when life allows, the teaching meets your child where they are.
