Chapter 01 · Lineage
Most dance schools list 'street dance' or 'hip hop' alongside ballet and tap. It's the style most often misrepresented. What gets taught is usually street jazz with a label slapped on, not the actual culture.
Real street dance is a family of foundation styles. Hip hop. House dance from Chicago. Locking from Don Campbell in 1970s LA. Waacking from the LA disco floors. Old School groove from the Bronx and Brooklyn block parties.
At HK we teach the foundation. Don Campbell's locking. The disco-arms of waacking. House footwork. Old school groove. By the time you join a crew session you can move properly in any of them.
At HK we teach the foundations the way they were taught: by dancers who studied with the elders, who battle, who travel, who keep the culture honest. Britain's Got Talent. World Hip Hop Championship finals. Adam Lambert tour backing. Real CVs, not just choreography reels.
Chapter 02 · Why we can teach it
Real teachers, real credits. Most schools say they do street dance. Here’s what ours have done.
Chapter 03 · Taught by
The street dance classes at HK are taught by these 6. Each has their own credits and takes their own lineage seriously.
Chapter 04 · What you’ll learn
Real progression, not a participation badge. Here’s what holds true for the kids who keep turning up.

Our specialism
At HK Dance, Street Dance is at the heart of everything we do.
We specialise in Street Dance because it is energetic, creative, inclusive and constantly evolving. It allows dancers to express themselves, build confidence and develop their own unique style while learning strong technical foundations.
Street Dance appeals to all ages and abilities, making it the perfect environment for beginners taking their first class as well as experienced dancers looking to develop their skills further.
Our classes draw inspiration from a variety of street styles, helping students improve their musicality, coordination, performance skills and creativity in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
We believe Street Dance is more than just learning routines. It’s about becoming part of a community, building lifelong friendships and gaining confidence that extends far beyond the dance studio.
Whether your goal is to dance for fun, perform on stage or compete at a higher level, Street Dance provides endless opportunities for growth, self-expression and enjoyment.
At HK Dance, we’re passionate about sharing that journey with every dancer who walks through our doors.
Parents ask
Street dance is the umbrella. Hip hop is the spine of it, with locking, waacking, house and old school taught as foundation styles alongside. Most schools use 'hip hop' and 'street dance' to mean the same thing. HK teaches all five foundations the way the originators did, so the kids who train here can actually move in any of them.
HK Dance Studios runs street dance and hip hop classes across four venues in Essex: Billericay HQ (Summerhill Farm, CM11 2UJ), Brentwood (King George's, CM14 5AE), Maldon (Wycke Hill, CM9 6UZ) and Basildon (opening 2026). Days and age groups vary per venue.
Street dance starts at age 2 with Hip Hop Tots (the toddler-warmth introduction) and runs through every age band: Minis 5-7, Juniors 8-12, Teens 13+ and Adult Commercial or Heels at 16+. The full street dance programme runs Monday through Friday at the Billericay HQ.
No. Most kids who join HK have never done a structured dance class before. Foundation styles are taught from scratch, and you'll be in a freestyle cypher inside three months. The first class is free, no card needed.
Six teachers across the four venues. Dionne Dalton (founder, 23 years), Ethan Brenchley (Britain's Got Talent semi-final 2022, World Hip Hop final 2019), Annie Farmer (Masters Performing Arts trained), Macey Houghton (15 years at HK), Daisy Smiles (U10 UDO British Street Champion, danced for Coldplay and Justin Bieber) and Lauren Knight (Maldon resident teacher). Full bios on the HK Teachers page.

Street dance is our specialism. Every other style is taught by a specialist who lives the work. Pick another to read about.
